Where ancient alpine ore meets modern mastery. Exceptional blades forged at altitude, where fire and frost conspire to create the extraordinary.
We source iron ore exclusively from high-altitude veins in the Swiss and Austrian Alps. The mineral composition at elevation produces steel of exceptional density and grain structure unmatched by lowland deposits.
Each blade receives a final quench in meltwater drawn directly from glacial runoff. The extreme cold creates a crystalline edge hardness that standard water or oil cannot replicate — a Voldur signature since 1987.
Every piece passes through the hands of a single master smith from first strike to final polish. No assembly line, no delegation. Your blade carries the full signature and responsibility of its creator.

Our forge sits at 2,400 meters in the Bernese Oberland, where the atmosphere is thin, the cold extreme, and the focus absolute. The altitude forces deliberate practice — no casual movement, no wasted strike.
The workshop was established by master smith Erik Voldur in 1987, and today his apprentice tradition continues with three master smiths who each trained for over a decade before touching a commission piece.
We journey to specific high-altitude veins each spring after snowmelt exposes fresh ore. Each batch is assayed for mineral content and only the highest quality alpine iron is selected for commission work.
The ore is smelted in our coal forge at 1,400°C and folded up to 128 times, creating the layered structure visible in the finished blade's grain and ensuring exceptional toughness throughout the steel.
The blade profile is drawn by hammer on the anvil — never ground into shape on machines. This preserves the grain flow, ensuring the steel's strength follows the line of the cutting edge naturally.
At critical temperature, the blade is quenched in water drawn from glacial melt at near-freezing temperatures. The rapid crystalline transformation at altitude creates hardness exceeding anything achievable at sea level.
Final hand-grinding, polishing, and handle fitting takes up to 40 hours per piece. Every Voldur blade is signed by its maker with a hand-engraved hallmark and registered in our permanent archive.
Erik Voldur establishes the forge at Grindelwald, choosing the site for its proximity to high-altitude ore deposits.
Discovery of the glacial quench technique after a blade accidentally fell into a meltwater stream, revealing extraordinary edge properties.
Commissioned to produce a presentation set for the Swedish Royal House, marking Voldur's international recognition.
Received the Swiss Blade Artisan Award for the sixth consecutive time — unprecedented in the award's 30-year history.
Each Voldur commission begins with a conversation. We want to understand how the piece will be used, carried, and passed on. From hunting knife to presentation blade, the intended life of the work shapes every decision.
Our current wait list extends to 18 months for full custom commissions. A 30% deposit secures your place and initiates the consultation process.
